Newest Sunderland Bridge Named The Northern Spire

Sunderland's newest bridge will officially open in the Spring of 2017.
But, even though the new Wear Crossing started work a long time ago, it has had no name until today.
An independent panel made up from the Sunderland community and business circle put forward three possible names.
The three names were, Northern Spire, Lumen Point and The Prism.
The public were asked to cast a vote on those three names.
Over 10,000 votes were cast and Northern Spire gained 49% of the vote.
Lumen Point got 34%, while The Prism got 17%.

So, the new Wear Crossing has its new name and road signs will go up in strategic places around the city.
Like it or loathe it, Northern Spire is the name of the newest Sunderland bridge and is here to stay.

I can just call the Northern Spire what everyone else will in Sunderland and that is 'The New Bridge'.
Like "gan ower the new bridge"
Its quicker if you gan ower the new bridge.
The new bridge will tack you there.

Its a regional name and not exactly a local Wearside thing but I think we will get used to it.

Three selections made by some people who think they can speak for local people, so no local input
The new bridge will prevail amongst us locals because we will not say the Northern Spire :?

So we all will say 'the new bridge' but those business leaders will say Northern Spire
I doubt I will be calling it the Northern Spire.
Take the A19 bridge from South Hylton to North Hylton, does anyone know its real name?
I just looked it up and its real name is the Hylton Viaduct and nobody ever says that!
We normally say the Hylton Bridge or just the A19 Bridge.
Well done business leaders for giving us a name that none of us will use.
