Fraudster Uses Pet Rat To Claim Free Meal

On Valentine's day 2015, a man called Christopher Baker, of Shields Place, Houghton calmly orders and eats a meal in Borneo Bistro restaurant on Hylton Road, Sunderland.

After Baker finishes his meal he takes a pet rat from his pocket and drops it on the floor and shouts "It’s a rat. I’m not eating here, I want my money back". People flee from the shop including Christopher Baker.

Not content with getting a free meal he walks back in the bistro and demands his £7.25 back.

Acorn Pest Control said the rat appeared to be a pet rat. The bistro owner, Kevin Smith. meanwhile, replayed the CCTV images and was shocked to discover that Baker had took the rat from his pocket and dropped it on the floor. Then Baker jumped out of his seat causing the alarm.

Police were called and Baker pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. Baker was sentenced to a 12-month community order with supervision and has to pay a £60 victim surcharge with £7.25 in compensation to owner, Kevin Smith. He was also banned from going to the restaurant for 12 months.

The bistro owner calls Baker "scum of the earth"..... and would anyone disagree?

In some backward middle east country I think we could possibly expect that but even there, people would be shocked at that.

For them comments alone I wouldn't go in Borneo Bistro while Kevin Smith. Maybe I could if he detracted his statements. He possibly made the outspoken comments in the heat of the moment while being interviewed by the Sunderland Echo. He says “He could have destroyed the reputation I have built up over seven years."

My message to Kevin is you have just ruined your reputation.

He played a cunning trick that backfired on him badly.
Taking a rat in a food shop or cafe/restaurant is very devious.
He doesn't appear to be the brightest bulb like.
Its a shame the bistro owner spoke up as if he was Hitler, but I can understand his anger.
