Penshaw Monument - Rainbow Lights - Orlando Shootings
Penshaw Monument - Rainbow Lights - Orlando Shootings
Penshaw Monument in Sunderland has been lit up in rainbow coloured lights - this is what the gay community use as their flag.
This is to honour those that were caught up in the ISIS attack on the gay nightclub in Orlando, USA.
Lighting up iconic buildings and structures seems to be a standard thing throughout the world now to make a statement.
Each of the pillars goes through the rainbow spectrum every couple of minutes and will be lit up like this for the whole week.
Sunderland Civic Centre and Durham Council are flying the rainbow flag at half mast as is the police station in Southwick.
Watch a video of the lights changing colour here on a time-lapse:

Its a nice gesture.

That's a canny video.
Well done Sunderland Council.
I think Penshaw Monument is run by the National Trust so they will have given permission.

Beautiful!
However, I think they could also light up the Wearmouth Bridge as well.

..... and Sunderland, the underdogs, are in the lead!

I fully agree, it might be my eyesight but I can't see the monument too clear and don't go by Penshaw Monument very often.Jackal wrote:Beautiful!

The town bridge could easily have the current lights adjusted for situations like this and other celebrations, like when Sunderland win the FA Cup
The Wearmouth Bridge is very busy obviously and would have a far better impact.

Looking good.
Penshaw Monument can be seen for miles so its one of the best structures to light up this way.

Re: Penshaw Monument - Rainbow Lights - Orlando Shootings
If they can do this for Penshaw Monument then they can easily do it for the Wearmouth Bridge.
